INITIATIVES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE CHAMBER

  • Championed the Cause of Filipino Enterprises and Laws favorable to Philippine Business for “Economic Nationalism” and “Economic Self Sufficiency.”
  • Pioneered foreign trade with the Philippine participation in the 1903 St. Louis Exposition in the U.S.A.
  • Sent the first trade mission in 1968 to Socialist countries: Yugoslavia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany and Soviet Union.
  • Sent the first trade mission to China in 1971, among many other international trade missions. This led to the establishment of Diplomatic ties with the PROC.
  • In 1926, the Chamber issued a MANIFESTO entitled Ours First, Yours Later.
  • Launched the First Filipino Movement which led to the passage of:
    • Filipinizing the “Retail Trade Law”.
    • The “Flag Law” which gave Philippine made products and services priority in government purchases and services, and is incorporated in the new Procurement Law.
    • Sponsored “Made in the Philippines Week” and the National Congress of Filipino Businessmen.
    • These initiatives gave birth to NEPA – National Economic Protectionism Association.” NEPA became a trademark and symbol of pride of Philippine Made Products.
  • Co-organized CACCI – Confederation of Asian Chambers of Commerce & Industry in 1964-1966 and the ASEAN Chamber of Commerce & Industry (which created the ASEAN-Free Trade Agreement and many other ASEAN Economic Agreements).
  • Helped established the Export Credit Insurance Corporation.
  • Established the Small Business Development Foundation in 1973 for SMEs.
  • Formed the Philippine Shipper’s Council.
  • Organized the first NBC – National Business Conference in 1975 now called the PBC – Philippine Business Conference.
  • Issued the Credo of the Philippine Business in 1970.
  • Galvanized trade fairs and exhibitions as a potent tool for business promotions, investments, technology transfers and education by: Initiating the birth of the first Trade Exhibition Hall, the Philippine Center for International Trade and Exhibitions (PHILCITE), and
  • Organizing the 1st Philippine International Trade Fair (PITF) in 1976.
  • Conducted researches, seminars, conferences and other events for business promotion and networking affecting the Philippine economy and to strengthen Philippine enterprises.
  • Provided the venue, ideas and discussion platform for Philippine Laws and became the private depository of the Official Gazette of Congress.

All the above ushered in the industrial development that made the Philippines the number one economy in ASEAN/Asia, next to Japan by the 1960s.
